 Enroll in a Circle

We have new circles to help the members of our community who have had their lives disrupted by Covid-19. We have 23 scholarships to offer. Please contact us to apply. Your tuition supports our leaders. Each math circle is limited to 6 participants and is conducted live on the Zoom videoconferencing platform. Please read FAQ for more information. We have a new set of circles starting on Mar 30, 2020 coming soon. Register here to stay updated.

Note: Please note that although we have specific days and times of circles posted for facilitating online registration, there is some flexibility in scheduling. If you are interested in a circle but can’t make the day it is offered, email us and we’ll see if the schedule can be tweaked to suit you!

$200
Circle meets on Thurs. In two dimensions, the sequence of polygons Triangle, Square, Pentagon, Hexagon, ... goes on forever. What happens in three dimensions (and beyond)?
$150
Circle meets on Tue / Thurs. We will explore relationships between two variables at an introductory level by looking at how we can map these variables on a coordinate grid.
$150
Circle meets on Tue / Thurs. We will explore the basics of set theory using both numerical and real-life situations.
$150
Circle meets on Tue / Thurs. Can you construct a square that's twice a given square? Doubling each side leads to four times the original square, not two... This mystery will kick off an exploration of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, squares, triangles, rectangles, and more. (NOTE: Children who know about Pythagoras' theorem or square roots may ruin the discovery for other students...)
$150
Circle meets on Mon / Wed / Fri. Pick any 5 cities in the world. Must some hemisphere contain at least 4? How many squares are hidden inside a chessboard? Come ponder paradoxes and puzzles to tease out geometric truth!
$150
Circle meets Mon / Wed / Fri. We'll search for unexpected patterns in familiar places and things--patterns that will help us make numerical predictions that will boggle the mind!
$225
Circle meets Mon / Wed / Fri. We will explore mysterious magic squares, which have dazzled people from all over the world for millennia. Magic squares are often used to represent perfection and universal natural order in the world. We will investigate the combinatorial and geometric properties of these squares, and create our own magic squares!

Circle meets Mon / Wed / Fri. Pick any 5 cities in the world. Must some hemisphere contain at least 4? How many squares are hidden inside a chessboard? Come ponder paradoxes and puzzles to tease out geometric truth!

Circle meets on Mon / Wed / Fri. Are there numbers between numbers? How far must you travel on a number line before you "bump into" another number? The answer may surprise you! (This is a continuation of a previous 6-session circle; newcomers welcome if willing to sweat a little bit to catch up!)
$250
Circle meets on Tue/Fri. Even the most disruptive and destructive events are written in the language of mathematics and therefore bound by its constraints. Together we will abstract the current pandemic that is confusing us all to a mathematical model and then work to tame that abstraction.
$250
Circle meets daily Mon through Fri. Let's examine mathematics through stories, fables and riddles. How will we know the answer to the riddle? Mathematics will help guide our path!
$150
Circles meet Mon/Wed/Fri. We'll search for unexpected patterns in familiar places and things--patterns that will help us make numerical predictions that will boggle the mind!
$250
Circle meets daily Mon through Fri. Have you ever wondered how magicians perform their card tricks? Much of it is mathematics! In this course we will examine some card tricks and explore how they work.
$150
Circle meets on Mon/Wed/Fri. Will a tortoise overtake a hare? Can you measure time with a burning rope? How do you trust a traveler on the island of liars? Come ponder paradoxes and puzzles to tease out mathematical truths lying within!
$150
Circle meets Mon / Wed / Fri. What happens when you turn a number LINE into a number WHEEL? We'll experiment with unusual visualizations of counting that will shed new light on long-established relationships between numbers.
$250
Dots do much more than separate wholes from parts! Explore how to use these tiny symbols to represent big number concepts and other visual-spatial ideas!
$250
What happens when you wrap a number line around a circle? We'll experiment with unusual visualizations of counting that will shed new light on long-established relationships between numbers.
$250
How does government work? Using our mathematical intuition, we'll see if we like the current way and, if not, plot a way to make it better.
$250
Projective Geometry from Fall 2019 continues and may morph into other non-Euclidean geometries now.
$250
How could the familiar counting numbers be puzzling when looked at closely? We'll reach for answers in this approach to Number Theory.
