Circles

We have new circles to help the members of our community who have had their lives disrupted by Covid-19. We have 17 scholarships to offer. Please contact us to apply. Your tuition supports our leaders. Each math circle is limited to 6-8 participants and is conducted live on the Zoom videoconferencing platform. Please read FAQ for more information. The Art of Problem Solving (Spring 2021)

We will collectively discuss and solve a few well-known, and seemingly unsolvable problems that require further thinking. These problems are not typical problems that you might see or hear about in a middle/high school classroom. They vary from algebra, logic, circle geometry, probability and fun puzzles. During these 10 sessions students will explore a handful of problem solving techniques, and feel the excitement of solving what at first glance seemed unsolvable.

Game theory

There is a strong connection between chess, the strategies of an army, and the prices of the fruits in the market, In this circle we will explore the beautiful concept of a game. We will understand how tic tac toe and the government decisions are deeply connected because in the bottom most of the human interactions are just games.

Ternary (and Other Fun Bases) Arithmetic using Robots!

In this circle we will travel to a planet inhabited by robots that have the incredible property of merging if they are three of the same. With the help of these robots we will discover the amazing arithmetic shapes of this world. We will merge several groups of robots, determine which one is bigger, and even have fun doing some battles between them. We will understand that the essential properties of arithmetic arise naturally once we understand the most basic rules behind numbering.

Finding Rules

How many inputs and outputs do you need to find a rule that just uses addition and subtraction? How about one that uses multiplication or division? What about other operations or mixes of them? Is there more than one rule that can work for various types of inputs and outputs? Explore how numbers relate to each other when we use different operations and how we can figure out what we are doing to them!

The Hidden Treasures

We intend to gain freedom and confidence by having the incontrovertible truths in the hidden maths of everyday life revealed. These discoveries will range from the treasures that maths keep hidden for us in all our daily actions, to experiences we will find through critical and creative thinking.

Chaos and Order

If 2020 taught us anything, it's that the world is pretty unpredictable. Thankfully, math and science help us make sense of things when they appear to be senseless. If you like talking about the weather, alphabet soup, and/or the concept of infinity, this circle is for you.
